COVER SIZING NOTES / 2026-10-22
KDP expects one size. Your PDF is another.
How do I fix a KDP cover size error?
Compare the PDF page width and height with the full-wrap dimensions in your current KDP template. If the difference is unwanted symmetric outer margins, crop those margins. If both dimensions differ by the same proportion, a small proportional resize may work. A changed spine width needs a source-design edit.

Start with the right target
A paperback cover is one PDF page containing the back cover, spine and front cover. A book’s trim size, such as 6 × 9 inches, is not the size of that full page. Use a fresh template for the same page count, paper, ink and trim settings as your KDP project. Copy the full-cover width and height, including bleed.
- Keep the exact original PDF and your editable design.
- Copy the expected full-wrap dimensions from the current KDP error or template.
- Open your PDF in the tool and compare its measured page size.
- Choose margin removal or proportional resizing only when the artwork suits that operation.
- Inspect the corrected preview, then check the exported file in KDP Print Previewer.
Use the difference to choose the next step
| What you observe | What to try | What could go wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Extra blank or unwanted space on all outer edges | Symmetric margin removal | Necessary bleed or artwork may be cropped too. |
| The whole page is slightly too large or small, with the same proportions | A small proportional resize | Spine placement, text size and effective image resolution change too. |
| Width changes after a page-count or paper change, but height stays the same | Edit the spine and panel positions in your design source | Stretching or cropping the whole page does not independently fix the spine. |
| Only the front cover is present | Create the missing full-wrap layout | A front-cover image cannot become a complete wrap by resizing. |
What a successful size match means
It means the PDF page has the width and height you entered. It does not prove that the artwork reaches the bleed, fonts are embedded, images have enough detail, the barcode fits, or the spine text is aligned. Cover Fit handles one page up to 20 MB, crops at most 0.5 inches per edge, and permits proportional resizing within ±10%. It rejects incompatible geometry instead of stretching a cover to force a fit.
